Who we are

The Author

Suzanne Younan is the founder of Draco Viridi and the volunteer group ‘Green  Dragons HK’.

Suzanne has been living with her family in Hong Kong since 2014.  A true nature and animal lover Suzanne was compelled to involve others in her plight to raise awareness.

A keen dragon boater and beach goer, Suzanne engaged the dragon boat community to reduce single use plastics at training and events.  At one race event it can be possible for 3-4,000 single use plastic bottles to be distributed to hydrate the paddlers.  The GDHK volunteer group has been working with paddlers, and event organisers, to bring alternative solutions to the single use plastic that is used.

On her journey it became apparent that education was key, especially to educate the young.  More than 5.3 million single use plastic bottles are thrown away in Hong Kong on a daily basis.  Yes DAILY!

During her volunteer work Suzanne decided to reach young minds with a story that might provoke a reaction in communities across Hong Kong and around the world.  The Green Dragon book was written to touch the hearts of children and to lead them into action, hopefully teaching their peers and family members along the way.

Draco Viridi is Latin for ‘Green Dragon’.

The Green Dragon in Chinese culture symbolises potent and auspicious powers, particularly over water, rainfall, typhoons and floods.  The dragon is also a symbol of power, strength and good luck. Draco Viridi was born from the desire to protect nature.

The Green Dragon Book

The Green Dragon is an old, wise character with many friends.  When his friends are hurt by the plastic pollution in the ocean he feels anger and despair.  A young boy comes to his rescue in more ways than one.

Read about Willy, the Green Dragon and his friends; Pearl, Myrtle and Eddie and how their stories inspire a little boy to take action.

The book is aimed at children of all ages. The beautiful illustrations will capture the youngest child’s imagination and the message easily understood.  The book has a brief educational section at the back that can assist parents, grandparents, babysitters or teachers to have a discussion to provoke action in the home, school or community in general.

“A beautifully illustrated book that tells a heart-breaking story which affects us all: young and old, regardless of where we live. The Green Dragon is a fantastic tool for use in classrooms or at home and will be an asset to any library.”

Take Action

How you can take action:

The book aims to be interactive.  Whether that interaction comes between child and parent or child and school teacher, all interactions will be beneficial!

Take the time to hold a discussion with the child you are reading to, pose questions; get their brains working and whirring on how they can make a positive impact in their own world.

Find some suggestions below on what you can do to reduce single use plastics in your life.

The world needs to focus on reduction not just recycling.

Changes you can make

In the kitchen

    •    Install a water filter at home. Stop buying plastic bottles.

    •    Replace cling wrap with beeswax paper or wax paper.

    •    Make your own cleaning products.  Stop buying harmful chemicals that ultimately         are packaged in plastic bottles.

    •    Use washable dish cleaning cloths/scourers.  Or a natural loofa. Replace those         plastic scrubbing pads.

In the bathroom

    •    Use bamboo tooth brushes. Replace the plastic toothbrushes!

    •    Use shampoo bars, eliminate those plastic bottles.

Out and about

    •    Carry a shopping bag with you at all times. Refuse plastic carrier bags.

    •    Use a refillable water bottle. Use water fountains when you are out and about.

    •    Don’t buy single-use plastic bottles!

    •    Reusable vegetable bags are the way to go at the supermarket. Try to avoid the very thin plastic bags offered for fruit and vegetables.

    •    Say ‘No’ to straws in your drinks.

    •    Ask your family to carry their own coffee cups.

    •    Ask your family to take reusable containers when buying takeaway foods, just like the old days!
